PUTTING IT TOGETHER: DECODING AND ENCODING

There are some great all-around activities to promote reading development. You can search through books at the library, surf the Internet, ask friends and family, and create your own. The important thing is that you do an assortment of different reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities with your child. The suggestions below may help to stimulate your own wonderful ideas.

My Ending

Sometimes, the saddest part of a book is the end because that’s it, no more! Sometimes a story’s ending is a big surprise, and other times it is easy to predict. You can make this an important part of learning by teaching your child that the end is not always the end! You can play this game with a new book or an old familiar book.

New book: Read a new story. Stop reading before the ending and ask your child to tell you the ending. Then, read the author’s ending. Talk about how they are the same or different.

Familiar book: Start with a well-told tale. You can use a book or just do an oral story. Let your child tell you the story. When the end is near, ask for a new ending.
